Apply for Free Solar Roof Plan 2024: Eligibility Criteria and Essential Details – The Kashmir Monitor

As the world faces the challenges posed by climate change and growing populations, the imperative for sustainable energy solutions becomes increasingly paramount.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the ‘Pradhan Mantri Suryodaya Yojana’, a government initiative aimed at providing rooftop solar power systems to households of one million people. While not the first attempt, the 2014 Rooftop Solar Program targeted a cumulative capacity of 40 gigawatts by 2022, but the goal was not met, prompting an extension to 2026.

What is the Modi government’s rooftop solar plan?

Launched in 2014, the program aims to enhance residential rooftop solar capacity in India by offering central financial assistance and incentives to distribution companies, following MNRE guidelines.

The key objective of this program is to raise the installed capacity of rooftop solar to 40 GW by March 2026, and is currently advancing in its second phase. As part of the plan, India’s rooftop solar capacity has increased from 1.8 GW in March 2019 to 10.4 GW in November 2023.

Criteria for the free solar roof plan 2024

The Free Solar Rooftop Plan 2024 requires a minimum area of 10 square meters to install a 1 kilowatt solar panel. This initiative provides a substantial 40 percent subsidy for the installation of solar panels between 1 and 3 kilowatts. Additionally, a 20 percent subsidy is offered for solar panels between 4 and 10 kilowatts. In particular, implementing solar systems in workplaces and large factories has the potential to reduce energy bills by 30 to 50 percent.

How to request it?

Visit the National Rooftop Solar Portal at https://solarrooftop.gov.in/ and navigate to the registration phase in the “Order Rooftop Solar” section on the home page.

Fill in the required details including country name, distribution company/business application and account number and click “Next” to continue.

Provisional budget 2024-2025

The interim budget for 2024-25 underlined the commitment to green energy, allocating Rs 26,376 crore for the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, a significant increase from Rs 17,729.46 crore.

Key allocations include Rs 8,500.35 crore for the solar energy (grid) scheme and increased funding for initiatives such as the National Green Hydrogen Mission and the Bioenergy Programme.

The budget also addresses rooftop solarization, targeting households of one million with the promise of 300 units of free monthly electricity. However, challenges remain, including lack of awareness, high installation costs, and regulatory hurdles in net metering.
