Jammu and Kashmir brace for three-day spell of rain

Srinagar: The MeT office in Jammu and Kashmir has forecast three days of rain from February 18, indicating that the high altitude areas of south Kashmir are expected to experience moderate to heavy snowfall.

Meteorological Department (MeT) Director Dr Mukhtar Ahmad said the weather will remain mostly dry until February 17, while the daytime temperature is expected to rise further in the coming days.

It added that a three-day wet spell is expected starting February 18, during which light to moderate snowfall is expected. “Light to moderate snowfall is forecast in the higher elevations, while light rain or snow is expected in the plains,” he said.

“Higher areas of south Kashmir are likely to receive moderate to heavy snowfall during the period,” he added.

The MeT director further mentioned that the maximum temperature has increased in most parts of JK and is expected to rise by a few more degrees in the coming days.

A minimum temperature of -3.6 degrees Celsius was recorded in Srinagar, the summer capital of JK, while the maximum temperature was recorded at 11.3 degrees Celsius today.

The coldest place was Pahalgam at -7.0 degrees Celsius, while the daytime temperature remained at 8.6 degrees Celsius.

Gulmarg, a famous ski resort, recorded a low of -4.5 degrees Celsius, while the daytime temperature stabilized at 5.0 degrees Celsius.

However, today Kupwara was the hottest at 12.6 degrees Celsius, while the night temperature remained at -4.4 degrees Celsius.

Furthermore, the MeT department, in its advisory, stated that due to significant accumulation of snow and sub-zero temperatures in many mountainous areas, travelers are advised to follow the advisories of the administration and traffic police (KNO).
