In a bid to boost solar energy and sustainable progress, Prime Minister Narendra Modi today announced that his government is launching the ‘Prime Minister Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana’ which aims to light up billion homes by providing up to 300 units of free electricity every month.
Prime Minister Modi said the project would involve an investment of over Rs 75,000 crore.
“In order to promote sustainable development and well-being of people, we are launching Prime Minister Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana. From substantial subsidies, which will be delivered directly to people’s bank accounts, to bank loans on very concessional terms, the central government will ensure that there is no cost burden on the people, he said.
All stakeholders will be integrated into a national online portal, the Prime Minister added.
Prime Minister Modi said that to popularize this scheme among the grassroots, urban local bodies and panchayats should be encouraged to promote rooftop solar systems in their jurisdictions.
“At the same time, the plan will generate more income, lower energy bills and job creation for the people,” the Prime Minister said.
