‘I’m not sure it makes sense to invest in him’: Sanjay Manjrekar calls for Indian team to leave KS Bharat – News18

Team India’s gloveman KS Bharat has been under the scanners after his disappointing show with the bat in the first two Tests against England. Bharat was picked as a specialist wicketkeeper but failed to impress with the bat in critical situations; Meanwhile, his ground handling was also below average at times.

Former Indian batsman Sanjay Manjrekar has raised doubts over Bharat’s place in India’s XI as first-choice wicketkeeper and believes it is time for India to move on from him.

“It’s not like he’s playing his first series. He has played before, he played all four Test matches against Australia and Rishabh Pant is coming soon. So, I am not sure if it is worth it and makes sense to continue investing in KS Bharat,” Manjrekar told ESPNCricinfo.

Apart from KS Bharat, India also picked Dhruv Jurel as the wicket-keeper option in the first two matches but the team management went ahead with the experienced star.

Manjrekar, however, believes that it is better for the Indian team to look at other options instead of Bharat. In the seven Tests he has played so far, the Andhra batsman has scored 221 runs at an average of 20.09 and a highest score of just 44.

Manjrekar added: “He is also not 20 years old and India went from KS Bharat to Ishan Kishan. So he’s done enough to maybe keep his place on the team. “The management of this team believes in being fair to each individual, but I would personally look for another option before Rishabh Pant comes in and takes his place.”

With Rishabh Pant still recovering from the injuries he suffered in the horrific card accident, Manjrekar believes the Indian team has to re-evaluate whether Bharat’s keeping skills are so good that they justify his selection in the team.

“India will start looking at KS Bharat if its maintenance is so good. We can afford to have someone who doesn’t contribute as much with the bat. Lately, India and the whole world, if you see it, are going for wicketkeepers who are decently good wicketkeepers but contribute with the bat. I mean looking at Rishabh Pant in the last 3-4 years, his contribution with the bat. So those are things that India will have to consider,” Manjrekar concluded.
