Team India’s young wicketkeeper-batsman Ishan Kishan has been out of action since November last year; He left India’s tour of South Africa midway, reportedly citing mental fatigue. Since then, Ishan has not returned to competitive action, although Cricbuzz The report suggested that he had started training alongside Hardik and Krunal Pandya in Baroda.
There has been a lot of speculation about Ishan’s absence from international cricket. Initially, Indian coach Rahul Dravid said the young player asked for a rest and the team respected his decision. Dravid mentioned that Ishan might return after featuring in some first-class matches. However, Dravid deviated from his statement earlier this week, indicating that he was not necessarily referring to “domestic” cricket.
As confusion reigns over Ishan’s absence, former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan questioned the youngster’s absence from cricket action. Without naming Ishan, Pathan said he finds it “baffling” to understand why a player is not available for domestic matches when he has returned to training.
“I find it baffling how someone can be fit enough to practice but not play domestic cricket. How does this make sense?” Pathan wrote on his official X profile.
Given KS Bharat’s poor performance with the bat in the current series against England, India could have benefited from the inclusion of Ishan Kishan had the youngster returned to action. Rishabh Pant, who is still recovering from injuries sustained in a car accident in December 2022, is yet to fully regain his fitness.
Along with KS Bharat, Dhruv Jurel is part of the squad for the remaining three Tests against the English team.
“We are in contact with him; it’s not that we haven’t been in contact. He hasn’t started playing well yet, so at the moment it’s not something we can consider. Because you know, maybe he’s not ready. He decides when he wants be ready. We have options with Rishabh injured and stuff. I am sure the selectors will weigh all the options,” Dravid said of Ishan Kishan after India’s victory in the second Test in Visakhapatnam.
Ishan made his Test debut last year during India’s tour of the West Indies, where he played both matches of the series.
