No concern Hamilton could take Mercedes information to Ferrari: Wolff

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff says he is not worried about the possibility of Lewis Hamilton bringing valuable information to Ferrari when he joins them next year.

Wolff only learned of Hamilton’s plans to join Ferrari when the pair met on Wednesday last week. Their final year working together at Mercedes will be the 12th of their relationship, and Wolff is confident Hamilton won’t take any development secrets with him when he heads to Maranello.

“In terms of future development, I think this is something we need to consider,” he told media, including RaceFans, last week. “The regulations practically remain the same (next year). And when 2025 arrives, we will evaluate later in the season what it means in terms of technical information.

“But that’s not something that bothers me at all. We have engineers who leave us and go to other teams and notice periods are sometimes as short as six months. “I have no doubt about Lewis’ integrity in terms of sharing information and in that sense, I just want to make sure, we want to make sure that this is a successful season for both drivers and a successful season for Mercedes and we will all give everything we can to achieve it.” .

He also noted that the team will continue to treat Hamilton and George Russell equally in their final season as teammates.

“What I have always tried to do as a team principal and all of us at Mercedes is to be transparent and fair, and nothing is going to change in that sense in 2024,” Wolff said. “We owe it to our principles and our intention to compete, to how we do it and we will respect it and I am sure that the drivers will respect it.”

However, he admitted that next year will be “a new situation to manage for Lewis and the team.”

“But it’s something that when you focus on the short term, and this is the racing team that is being deployed to run the product, that doesn’t have a huge impact on everything that happens in the future on the development side.

“I am always interested in new and challenging situations and balancing the interests of Mercedes of 2024 with the interests of the drivers of 2025 is something that we will discuss openly at the beginning on how to manage it and we will certainly reach a good result between us.”

Last month, Mercedes confirmed that Wolff had extended his contract as CEO and team principal. He also has a one-third stake in the team and said he would not have reconsidered extending his contract if he had known of Hamilton’s plans earlier.

“No, that wouldn’t have changed that. I think whatever role on the team or whatever title you give it, I’ll be there in the future. Therefore, it was a no-brainer to continue in an executive position. You can call him CEO or general manager, president or team leader, the easiest way was to continue with what we have.

“It wouldn’t have affected me because I am very proud to be part of this Mercedes Formula 1 team that carries this huge legacy of star and racing history and we are going to write more history in the future as a Mercedes Formula 1 team. And that It is what I intend to do with all the team members and with everyone in Stuttgart and therefore, as much as this trip is so special, we have 10, 20 or more years before we are hit by a bus to be more successful. .”
