Top 10 Minecraft Features That Changed the Game Forever

Minecraft has one of the most widely documented development histories of all games. Having seen active development for over a decade, the current state of the game is almost unrecognizable compared to the previous version due to the different features that have been added and changes made over the years.

That being said, we look at 10 additions and changes that created the biggest impact on Minecraft as a whole.

Top 10 Features That Changed Minecraft the Most

10) Ender Chests/Shulker Boxes

As Minecraft continues to receive updates, more items are added to the game for players. For example, take the upcoming Minecraft 1.21, which will add wind charges, saving players from fall damage, and wolf armor, which keeps dogs safe. Both are items that players may want to keep for emergencies.

However, even though more additions have been added to the game, the inventory remains the same, aside from two incredibly useful additions. The first was the ender chest. It works like a normal single chest, but all of a player’s final chests contain the same items.

Next up were Minecraft’s ever-useful shulker boxes, which function as chests that hold items when broken. But what really broke the storage was being able to place shulker boxes inside an ender chest. This means that players can effectively carry around 27 additional inventories within a single final chest.

9) Netherite

For most of the game’s existence, there was a single resource that players sought to accumulate and trade: diamonds. They gave players the best tools, weapons, and armor in the game, making them iconic due to their importance to players. But with the addition of netherite, this was no longer the case.

The diamond was now in second place, and an even more difficult to obtain material occupied its throne. While useful, this fundamental change to Minecraft’s item hierarchy certainly changed the game forever in a major way.

8) Charming

Enchanting ranks as the eighth most game-changing feature due to how much more efficient and lethal it made players. Specially designed enchanting areas give players access to these huge advantages. Unbreakability and efficiency allow players to clear large areas quickly, fortune provides players with abundant resources, and repair means that all created equipment can be repaired with XP and used indefinitely.

Armor can also be enchanted to block more damage or even return damage to attackers. Weapons can become more lethal or receive unique effects, such as summoning lightning bolts, setting targets on fire, or having unlimited ammunition.

7) Abyssal Fortresses/The Abyssal Review

While they are technically two different features, they achieve the same goal. When it was first added, there was no reason to go to the bottom; all it had to offer players was danger and glowstone. The nether fortresses gave players a reason to go to the bottom, needing to hunt llamas to reach the final dimension. But all it did was cause the abyss to stop temporarily.

The lower revision really changed things for the better. He added new biomes, mobs, items and nether structures, such as the piglin stronghold. If the nether fortress gave players a reason to visit it, the overhaul gave players a reason to keep coming back.

6) New Generation of Terrain

Although Minecraft’s world generation and art style have become iconic over the years, this didn’t stop the old world generation from feeling too random at times. Caves were cut unnaturally, biomes changed quickly and abruptly, and floating patches of terrain were common.

This was until world generation was completely revamped, adding 128 blocks to the top and bottom of each world and generally updating the generation code. This additional depth allowed Mojang Studios to add features like ancient, deeply dark cities, allowing players to create even larger megabases and making worlds feel more natural.

5) Villager Trade

Villager trading is, without a doubt, the most powerful system that players have access to within base Minecraft. Through clever use of game mechanics, players can gain near-infinite access to many of the game’s best resources, such as redstone, diamond tools, armor, weapons, and powerful enchantments, including repair, all from the comfort of an elaborate trading room.

The wide variety of resources that players have access to, combined with the ease with which the Emerald Economy can be opened, is why villager trading ranks as the fifth most innovative feature ever added.

4) The end

The addition of the final dimension is the first of Minecraft’s four big changes, which are so significant that they shake the foundation of the game to such an extent that it changes the very identity of the title as a result.

The final dimension marked the first time that players had a concrete ending point. If they could find a Minecraft fortress, travel to the end, and kill the dragon, the credits would roll. The game could now be won. The gender switch is what makes this addition so shocking. The title was no longer an endless quest for survival; a conclusion had to be reached.

And since the game could be beaten, speedrunners were able to start running it, which greatly contributed to the game’s second resurgence in popularity and skyrocketed YouTubers like Dream to viral status.

3) Hunger

The addition of hunger is the first of the second of the four major changes, as described above. Its incorporation as a mechanic completely changed the way players had to approach survival.

In the past, food could be stored indefinitely and only needed to be used if the player took damage. This meant that skilled or lucky players never had to eat. The addition of the hunger bar meant that food, as a resource, would be constantly depleted. Players had to start farming to replenish their food reserves.

2) red stone

Redstone is the second most impactful change Mojang has ever made to Minecraft. Although relatively unpopular at first, over the years Redstone has evolved to the point where its influence has changed the very DNA of the game.

Minecraft’s complex endgame auto farms, famous for producing hundreds of thousands of items per second, wouldn’t be possible without these additions, meaning the game’s overall skill cap would be much lower.

Needless to say, if gamers can create fully realized processors using a game’s built-in engineering components, it will likely be a significant change.

1) Survival mode

Hands down, the feature that changed the most to Minecraft was the addition of survival mode. Before this, the game was a much more limited creative building game, where players made simple structures. Survival gave players one goal: explore the world, fight mobs, and light up the night.

This change allowed Minecraft YouTubers to begin appearing, boosting the game’s popularity and putting it on the trajectory to become the best-selling game of all time. The importance of adding survival mode cannot be understated, as survival mode is now literally Minecraft. In fact, the function has become the game.

Minecraft has evolved significantly over its decade of development. And it’s sure to change even more in the coming years as design philosophy within the gaming industry changes. With Minecraft update 1.21 and its many features being added in the coming months, the game is evolving even now, and each new addition is likely to be the next most impactful one.
