An innocent bystander was killed and five other people, including two teenagers, were injured when shots were fired on a New York City subway train as it stopped at the Mount Eden Avenue subway station in the Bronx.
At least 10 shots were fired at the Mount Eden Avenue station after a fight broke out between two groups of teenagers inside a train on Monday afternoon (local time). Police and witnesses said the shooting created “total pandemonium” inside the police station.
No motive was given for the shooting.
Broadcasters showed a major emergency response at the elevated Mount Eden Avenue subway station in the northern borough of the Bronx, nine miles (14 kilometers) north of Times Square in Manhattan.
Police detectives and agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives were at the scene conducting a fingerprint search after the shooting.
“We are on the scene of an ongoing investigation at the Mount Eden Avenue station on the Bronx (subway). Please avoid the area…Use alternate routes and expect traffic in the area,” NYPD Deputy Commissioner of Operations Kaz Daughtry said on social media.
Mass shootings are common in the United States, where there are more guns than people and about a third of adults own a firearm.
Polls show a majority of Americans favor stricter gun regulations, but the powerful gun lobby and mobilized voters who support the country’s culture of strong gun rights have repeatedly stymied lawmakers. time to take action.
New York has a lower homicide rate than many major U.S. cities, and possessing firearms in public is illegal for civilians in almost all cases.
